Designing from the Style Sheet pt. 2: Ranged Variant & Others

After finishing the last post I realized I had a TON of ideas inspired by that style sheet for the Frontiersmen and decided to push out a few more of these based on various other stereotypical character archs for the Frontiersmen culture. So, without further adeu enjoy this ranged variant of the Homesteader and maybe a Halfling Homestead Slinger. Designing on Style: Building an NPC Blank from a Design Doc

Over the last few days, I was inspired to create a series of Style Guide for my home campaign and figured that this work would be perfect project for my audience to enjoy. The first in this series is the Frontiersmen. Settler immigrants and their descendants, these people are a culture and one of the primary factions that my Players may join as a faction option for my campaign. This makes them one of the most important and most common peoples they are likely to run into during any given session, and that means their consistent portrayal is important to not only telling my story, but to achieving immersion going forward. So with that, lets look at... The Concept:  Frontiersmen are meant to be a hodgepodge, a group of immagrants from Empire to the Southeast that have migrated here over the centuries for a variety of reasons. This means that this faction is in some ways even less consistent internally than other factions might be, since their only initial defining feature is, "le...

World Design Challenge: The Cavalier Orders of Oki, The Order of Beasts

Image
So, since we are all quarantined and I have recently left my job, I now find myself with a lot of free time and some creative projects to work on. So, I'm going to try some new ideas and see what I like, and what sticks with my audience, what of you may exist. So lets get at it! For those of you who do not know, I run a weekly Pathfinder game with friends in a homebrew setting. We have been running for about a decade now, and the current narrative has been happening for about... 5 years? This link should take you directly to our wiki if you are interested in learning more about our current campaign. So the challenge. For the longest time one of my favorite classes in Pathfinder's 1st edition has been the Cavalier, and one of my favorite things about the Cavalier has been the Orders. These various Order Options draw on the idea of the fraternal orders of knights of old or other political factions with militant orders from histories past, and the potential for their meddl...

Pathfinder Epilogue, The Best of the 3rd Party pt. 1: The Weird, Niche, and Wonderful

Image
So, with Pathfinder 1st edition coming to a close I think it's time to take a look back on some of the best stuff to come out of the 3rd party stable over the last 10 years. The list of books that has come out in the last few years alone has been truly staggering and as Paizo lays 1st ed to rest and players and GMs look to snap up 3rd party content to fill the void I've compiled this... "small" list of content to help out. So whether you are a GM looking to fill that aforementioned void of new content for your old system or a group looking to add some great weird or unseen content to your game while you wait for 2nd ed to catch your fancy or whatever check this out. And if you're one of those people who gets overwhelmed just looking at the SEA OF STUFF that is the DrivethruRPG shopping list, don't worry, this is to help you guys too. This first set is a lot of great content I think of that I love but might not get noticed amid the sea of heavier hitters I ...

My Reading List: Rapid Fire Updates

Image
So it's been a while since I posted last and with the new job and a lot of projects on the table I have been a little pressed for time. Fortunately, I've managed to cram what reading I can into the 15 minute breaks and pre unconscious post work collapses I have managed to scrounge together. So here is a list of the Pathfinder stuff I have been reading for the last 6 months and the short reviews of a FEW of the things I've been reading. Legendary Hybrids: The Doomguard  A new 3rd party hybrid class by Legendary Games, the Doomguard is one part cavalier, one part ranger, and all angst. Basically a warrior doomed to die by the hands of some known tragic violence likely brought on by a horrible monster's hands, the Doomguard is both cursed by this knowledge and empowered by it. You get to defy fate with some modified challenge mechanics, get to change your skills based on what creature type is looking to murder you in the future, and surprisingly curses that come...
